The Opera Appreciation group began 2017 by completing our challenging series of 20th century operas and attempting to understand atonality. In complete contrast Keith Coates lead the group for two Italian operas. We moved on to Mozart with his free flowing tunes and amazing creative energy. We then watched a 21st century opera by our own Todmorden composer Tim Benjamin who joined us to introduce it .We commenced a season of Russian opera. Again we have mixed some very well known and loved opera like Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin with the less often performed Ruslan and Ludmila by Glinka. We have also had excellent presentations by members Mike Benton on Mozart and Wendy and Keith Coates on Tchaikovsky. Audrey Locksley played us some favourite arias and Susan Benton provided us with an opera crossword! We started 2018 with a New Year lunch at the Stubbings and viewing of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. Keith has kindly agreed to convene the group for February and March as last year.
