For our first outing of the year, it is proposed to visit Bolling Hall In Bradford on Sunday 22ndFebruary at 2:00 pm. This is one of the oldest houses in Bradford. The Manor of Bolling was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The earliest part of the building dates from the 13th century. It’s owned by Bradford Council, and admission is free. Bolling Hall was notable in the 2nd siege of the Civil War as being a Royalist base, when Bradford was known to sympathise with the Parliamentarians. At the Battle of Adwalton Moor in 1643, the Royalists were successful in overcoming the Parliamentarians, resulting in the Royalists having control of all of Yorkshire.
I’ve been advised there should be 2 staff available to give information whilst we explore the Hall. (The Turner Prize exhibition ends on 22 February which means it isn’t possible to have a guided tour at this time.)
There is the Lodge Café nearby, which can provide refreshments before our visit to the Hall. It’s very popular at weekends, so they’ll make the upstairs room available to us, which is very comfortable, to have lunch. (There is a stair lift, should you require it). They can provide a buffet which can be prepared in advance, as the kitchen is very busy making brunch for the locals on Sundays. There is roadside parking by the Café.
The Hall is just a short walk downhill from the Café. There is a large car park behind Bolling Hall if you are driving.
One thing to be aware of: there are a lot of steps within the hall, with no lift. The stairs are all wooden, but there are plenty of handrails.
Getting there
To get to the Hall by car is quite easy, and will take approx. 1 hour from Todmorden. Post code BD4 7LP, address, Bowling Hall Road, Bradford.
Public Transport is also quite straightforward. I suggest get the train to the Bradford Interchange. Once at the Interchange, take the escalator down to the Bus Station. You need the 621 Bierley Circular bus.
For the Café you need to get off the bus at the Lister Avenue stop, and for the Hall you would get off at the Flockton Road stop.
On Sundays, buses depart at 12:10 (on the Journey planner, or 12:14 on the timetable), 12:41 and 13:14
It is a short downhill walk from the café to the hall. If you’re lucky you may catch the bus for the one stop to Flockton Avenue for the Hall.
Trains run from Todmorden at 11:18, 11:42, 12:18 and 12:42 (Hebden Bridge 7 minutes later) and take 33 or 34 minutes to reach Bradford Interchange. The 11:18 should be taken if you want to take lunch in the café, or the 12:18 if you want to go direct to the Hall by bus.
For your return, the bus stop is just outside the Hall.
Please use the form below to let me know asap if you would like to join us. It is short notice, and I need to confirm likely numbers with the Café and the Hall, so they can ensure arrangements are in place for our visit.
