Alfresco History visit to Sunny Bank Mill

On 1st May, 11 members of the group, travelling in three cars, arrived at 11 AM in brilliant sunshine and found their way to the Museum and Archive, situated in a weaving shed at the highest point on the site. We were given a historical overview of weaving at the mill by Rachel Moaby, the Heritage Director of the charitable trust that runs the museum and archive. She brought the heritage of the mill to life through pen portraits of the successive owners of the businesses that operated there through the preceding three centuries. It turned out that our own Barbara Wigley was a 6-generation descendent of one of those. The mill produced fine wool from Merino sheep, and among the customers were the army in the two world wars and customers in the Arabian Gulf who appreciated the fine cloth. We were able to see and feel samples of the cloth for ourselves.
