Our final walk of 2025 will be led by Bill Black on Tuesday 25th November and will be from Mytholm to Todmorden on the north side of the Calder Valley, starting at 10:10am approx. Here are the details from Bill:-
We’ll start at the junction of King Street (as the A646 is known at that point) and Savile Road. Going up Savile Road, we take the first road left — the footpath below has been diverted — and continue to the Bowling Club car park. Straight ahead, we take a footpath through the woods. This path is strewn with fallen leaves for much of the way but it is sound underfoot. As we emerge above the woods, the path affords good views towards Horsehold and Stoodley Pike. The woodland path eventually emerges onto Turrett Hall Road (unmade woodland road) until we join Winter’s Lane, from which we’ll follow the contour around the head of Jumble Hole Clough towards Great Rock. There, we join Eastwood Road briefly, until we reach a junction offering three different directions. From there, at another time of year, we’d have followed the middle one, which is the Calderdale Way. However, it isn’t in great condition for walking at the moment — I’ve tried it so you don’t have to — so instead, we’ll take Crossley New Road which becomes Cross Stone Road, a better choice at this time of year. This is currently very quiet as it’s partially closed to traffic. From Cross Stone hamlet, our route into Todmorden will be via the Stansfield Hall footbridge and thence Stansfield Road.
Total distance 5.5 miles
To reach the start of the walk, take a 591 from Todmorden towards Halifax at 09:54 and get off at the Green Springs stop, which is shortly after you’ve gone under a railway bridge. From the other direction, the 590 leaving Halifax at 09:31 passes Mytholmroyd at 09:56 and Hebden Bridge at 10:02. Get off at the stop after passing the Stubbing Wharf pub. [The attached map extract shows the location of the Savile Road junction, where the walk starts, relative to the Stubbing Wharf and the bus stops in each direction]. You can also get close on the 596, which you should alight after the turning circle.

You can let me know (at toddypg@gmail.com) if you plan to participate but, as usual, late decision-makers are also welcome to just turn up at the start.
Best wishes,
Peter
