4½ - 5 miles circular walk from Hebden Bridge, via Chiserley and Midgehole
Departure point: Hebden Bridge New Road bus stop (by Café On’t Front). 10:45am.
591 bus departs Todmorden BS 10:23; arrives Hebden Bridge 10:44
592 bus departs Halifax BS 10:13; arrives Hebden Bridge 10:43
From Hebden Bridge town centre we will take the steps and steep cobbled path (handrail to right side part-way and then to left side) up Birchcliffe hillside. We will reach Sandy Gate via the Birchcliffe Centre car park. Approx. 250 yards of road walking before we take a wooded, rocky path – and then fields – to Chiserley (e.t.a. at recreation field, Walker Ln/Parrock Ln: 11:30). Should anyone want to join the walk there, please phone/text me – Jane Milne 07455 888515.
Then follow a footpath around the hillside above Old Town to an old quarry, with a few high steps to negotiate. Pick up a (deep-rutted, narrow) footpath through fields - and awkward step through/down a wall gap - to Slack House Lane. Join Calderdale Way (uneven, stony, for short distance, then tarmac) down to Akroyd Lane (bus stop), and then 200yds of road walking towards Pecket Well. Potentially slippery (but, thankfully, short) descent, with brambles and nettles at chest height, to cross the A6033 into Pecket Well Clough.
Dropping down the clough, along a good path, we will come to a bridge, providing a good refreshment stop*. Continue through Pecket Well Clough, descending to Midgehole (toilets). Pick up the riverside path (but includes some road walking) to Hebden Bridge. Back to town centre, via Valley Road
